总统川普6日宣布，美国承认耶路撒冷为以色列首都，并指示国务院开始准备将美国大使馆从特拉维夫迁至耶路撒冷。
美国成为以色列1948年建国以来，第一个承认耶路撒冷为以色列首都的国家。
耶路撒冷的地位一直是以色列与巴勒斯坦的争议核心，以巴皆声称耶路撒冷是他们的首都。川普此举兑现其竞选支票，但推翻美国数十年的中东政策，恐造成中东地区动荡加剧。
川普6日下午1点左右在白宫说，“现在是正式承认耶路撒冷为以色列首都的时候。”川普称，宣布仅是承认现实。
川普表示，这个决定并不代表美国悖离对和平协议长久的坚定承诺，美方希望有个对以色列人与巴勒斯坦人而言都好的协议。
川普指出，美国并没有对任何最终地位，或是争议边界的解决方案采取立场，这些问题应由有关各方决定。
“美国致力于推动双方（以巴）都能接受的和平协议。”川普还说，若双方同意，美国将支持“两国方案”（Two-state solution），在此之前美方呼吁各方维持现状。
川普并表示，副总统潘斯近期将前往中东，重申美国对中东地区的承诺。
在川普宣布之前，国务卿提勒森（Rex Tillerson）6日在比利时布鲁塞尔的北约（NATO）总部举行记者会时表示，“总统非常致力于中东和平进程”。
提勒森说，川普入主白宫不久后立即成立小组，该小组非常用心努力寻找和平进程的新方式，并“悄悄”与区域多方交流。
提勒森指出，美方仍然认为，还是有很好的机会能让以巴走向和平，川普有个小组完全致力于解决该问题。
